Nutshell Wisdom: There is a Difference Between Tradition and Rigidity

nutshell wisdom there is a difference between tradition and rigidity

Even in the midst of family and old friends, you are an adult with the right to think for and decide for yourself. Just because something has been done a certain way for however many years – or generations – doesn’t mean it can’t change now.

Changing old traditions and/or adding new traditions to your holiday plans does not have to be disrespectful or insensitive. You can stand up “for” yourself, without standing “against” someone else.

You cannot, however, control how others may respond to the new, improved you. And if you rock the family boat this holiday season by taking good care of yourself, remember that as long as you do your part to be honest, fair, and respectful, you are not “abusing” someone else just because they are upset with you. Everyone has a right to their opinion and emotional response. But don’t forget: this includes you.
